Construction ManagementConstruction stresses trees. It compacts soils, limiting water availability and root space. It also often means excavating near trees, damaging the root system.
There are several Treatment options for a construction stressed tree: Plant Growth Regulators If you wish to give your tree the highest chance of survival, plant growth regulators can be used. These hormones reduce the energy being exerted toward new growth and diverts it underground where the roots can use the energy to regenerate. Half of the tree is seen above ground, the other half is below the surface Radial Trenching Radial Trenching is the digging of trenches in a post-construction compacted soil that radiate outward from the tree. These are dug with a supersonic air knife that blasts the dirt from around the roots without damaging them. The trenches can then be filled with compost and soil mixes to improve nutrient availability in the soil and also improve the soil structure. The urban Landscape can be a harsh environment. By trenching under a tree, one can reduce soil compaction, increase water infiltration, and free space for root systems to generate healthy new fibrous roots. Mulch A layer of mulch after construction is done can do a couple of things. It can help remediate soil structure after compaction, and can also improve the moisture content in the soil. |
